❀ Celebrating my mom ❀ with a Goan Sourak
22nd Mar, 2012, by Drina Cabral
It's terrible, I have been so busy with so many things , I believe I am getting ahead of myself and trying to fit a 28 hour day into a 24 hour day. If it isn't midnight work hours or socializing or cooking its taking care of Sasha or endless chores or running errands to sort out the bills; at any given time there is something or the other. I truly admire the women with babies in their arms, managing a whole household, working during the day and still making sure the family sits together at the dinner table with their favorite dishes in front of them. How do you do it?
The array of dishes my mom laid out for house parties
My mom! She did just that! Oh what an inspiration she is, how she did it just baffles me... can't really seem to strain the logic off it all. When she was 28, besides raising 3 kids she organized birthday parties for all of us managing and planning out themes, kiddy games and of course catering for 30 odd people as well; she would sew all our school uniforms and imaginative party attires; helped with the homework, attended parent teacher meets; and did all of the housework making sure not a spec of dust was in sight, and to top it all she made it to work on time every morning after seeing us off to school with breakfast filled tummies and teensy lunch boxes in our hands. This ones for you mom; for how awesome you are, for giving us so much, raising us the way you did and I promise not one bit you done has gone un-noticed, we know it wasn't easy but; I am where I am because of you, I am a better cook because of you, I am a better person because of you and no amount of thanks, money or anything can really make up for it, but I can try.  ♥ Thank you mommy! and a Happy Mothers Day to you! ♥

Ever since I was a child, my mom would make this delicious Goan Poached Egg Curry called "Sourak" (pronounced sow-rak) It has a very distinct flavor and nothing like you would have ever tasted in any known Indian restaurants. Traditionally, the Goan staple meal is rice, curry and fish; back in Goa every afternoon meal in every house you go to is just that: Rice-Curry-Fish! My dad being the true Goan that he is, would always demand some fish curry. My mom knew how to gamble... with food that is; she would sneakily prepare this egg curry on fridays since she knew that us kids were fussy about fish and my dad would gladly turn a blind eye to it not being a fish curry. It was that delicious... I tell you the worlds sins would be forgiven with just one taste of this. When I was a kid I couldn't care for the fish (not the case now) and the rice.. well I have always found rice to be pretty boring; so I just had this curry... IN A BOWL! My mom would always yell out "You can't eat curries like that, you may get a tummy ache, it isn't a soup Drina! " Did I ever pay heed? Never.. this curry was divine, I would lick it spotless clean, wiping off every drop of its deliciousness from the sides with some bread. It was a mild tangy curry, with flavors of coconut milk and mango in it. The curry was so forgiving and versatile, if you didn't have eggs you didn't need it, with or without the eggs it didn't matter; thats what my mom did... just a plain Sourak with some fried fish on the side; Oh and sometimes it would just get that much better... how? well my dad would find some super fresh prawns in the fish market and plop!! they went into the curry accompanied with some ladyfingers (its okra but just longer in size); the prawns and ladyfingers always go in as a pair, never just one or the other.   Oooh and this dish does have a secret ingredient.. I love secret ingredients and the magic of this dish is all in the dried mango peels, it's this what adds the tangy flavor to the curry and gives it its charm. Its pretty tart, in fact very tart, but I love it! I was one of those kids that chewed on a slice of lemon and if you are anything like me then you will definitely love this. The mango peels needn't be eaten per say, it is mainly put in for the flavor; but I do eat it, relish it in fact. I have tasted a dozen different Souraks; friends, relatives and extended families alike, everyone from the farthest corners of Goa have all heard of my crazy desire for this tangy curry; when I make my yearly (sometime bi-yearly) visits to Goa all of them would attempt to greet the Dubai Resident with their version of a Sourak... but sad to say they don't even come close, and this is not just me saying "my mom's food is the best" in all honesty.. my mom's Sourak IS the best!
